BLOGSThe Standard MAF has released the final report of their investigation into the pig farm owned by former Pork Board Director Colin Kay, exposed on the Sunday programme in May. As all those who knew anything about the Animal Welfare Act and subsidiary Codes of Welfare predicted, the farm in question has been found to be operating within the law. SAFE's reasoning for wanting to keep the focus on intensive pig farming in general rather than some sideshow about the supposed "rogue farm" has been validated. more...
Frontline Most of us are well over swine flu. The much hyped virus is spreading at will around the world and public health authorities have moved to managing the spread from their initial attempts to stop the outbreak. Partly this is because the latter would place a huge economic burden on national economies but more importantly because the virus itself produces only mild influenza symptoms in most patients. more...
The Standard It's good to see Green MP Sue Kedgley calling on John Key to personally fix the abuse of pigs in sow crates. The chair of Nawac appears incapable of seeing that there's even a problem, and the Minister of Agriculture has already been caught misleading the public on national television to defend the industry. It's up to John Key to show some leadership and sort this mess out. more...
The Standard It seems the Minister of Agriculture David Carter misled the public regarding his knowledge of the use of sow crates in pig farming, when he stated on the Sunday Programme on May 17th, "No I didn't know to the extent to which they were confined other than for farrowing purposes" more...
gBlog No, this post is not about Melissa Lee. I've had enough of her, and am rather bored with her stupid antics! It is about missing the evidence. It is about David Carter, Minister of Agriculture, and about factory farming. more...
The Guide2 It's truly been a week for pigs, both of the genuine swine variety and of the human political one. It's already been a bad year for our actual pig friends as first swine flu swept Mexico and now threatens to sweep the globe. One major contributing factor in the case of the Mexican outbreak has been said to be the poor, unhygienic state of pig farming facilities owned by multinational US pork corporations there. more...
The Bullpen As a country based on animal exports, it's important that our animal welfare standards lead the world. We must be ahead of anyone who sees our standards as a way to block our trade. Before we start trying to change the world, we need to start off at home, and New Zealanders need to know what's going on and especially why. more...
Frontlawn My time, recently, has been entirely occupied with writing and editing and fretting over details that didn't seem important when I thought I was proving something, some other time in the previous four years. more...
Peter Sankoff At this point, it's pretty rare for me to be shocked by anything said by those in charge of creating or enforcing animal welfare legislation in New Zealand. Over the past ten days, I've heard some pretty outrageous claims from producers, the Minister of Agriculture, and even from members of the National Animal Welfare Advisory Committee (NAWAC) - the group of appointed "experts" tasked with creating the Codes of Welfare that represent the "bottom line" for most farmed animals in terms of welfare standards. more...
The Pundit It's got all the right ingredients: local celebrity, an epiphany, cute animals, industry bad guys, hoodwink, public outrage - the media's happy as a pig in muck, this week. But why did it take so long? more...
PublicAddress Given our history of quietly shelving issues that might deflate the bounty of our farms, it's remarkable that the weekend's Sunday programme on factory pork has provoked such a rapid and prodigious response. more...
Throng What is it with TVNZ and their sudden infatuation with pigs? Ever since there was the hint that the species hopping virus those poor Takapuna Grammar students bought back into the country may have been a population eliminator, news crews and news anchors have tried to get as close to the action as physically possible. more...
DogMog Comedian Mike King surprised me last night. I had written him off as a pork advertising, unfunny, arse, but thanks to his courage in speaking out, he has gone up in my estimation (but he is still not very funny). It takes guts to go out there and say "I was wrong". Good on him. more...
Peter Sankoff Sort of an unconventional blog today. Rather than focus on a single item, I'm going to talk about aspects of the pig farming debate that ARE BUGGING ME.... The story changes so fast, and is subject to so much "spin", that it's hard to keep up. Here are my "two-cents" on a lot of little things that might have slipped by. more...
GreenVoice Big ups to Mike King! To be honest, I've never really liked the guy's humour, and have especially not liked the sexist stuff alongside Tony Veitch, Matthew Ridge etc on Game of Two Halves. But Mike King has had a bit of an awakening, after actually visiting a pig farm. more,,,
The Standard Chair of the NZ Pork Industry Board Chris Trengrove told Campbell Live last night, "The industry is changing and has been changing since 2005, we've been monitoring those changes, um, we have over half of the industry now out of the stalls altogether..." more...
Peter Sankoff An interesting sideline to note in the recent kerfuffle over pigs brought on by the Mike King/Sunday report investigation. It has been reiterated in several reports that the Pig Code, which governs the conduct seen in the report, is up for review this year. It seems to be accepted as a general assumption that this review will happen, and perhaps make things better. more... Bill Ralston The furore over the treatment of pigs in intensive farming is a little curious. We have calls for a public pork boycott, the Prime Minister is disturbed, MAF is investigating, animal welfare groups are baying for blood and the pork industry has, horror of horrors, had to postpone its much anticipated Bacon of the Year Awards. more...
The Standard So, Agriculture Minister David Carter finally creaks into action on the brutal and inhumane treatment of factory farmed pigs, then spends most of the press release attacking the animal rights group that brought the issue into the public light. more...
Kiwiblog Agriculture Minister David Carter had earlier asked animal rights campaigners to give up the name and location of the farm shown on TVNZ's Sunday programme. The images showed pigs frothing at the mouth and unable to move inside their cages and aired on TVNZ's Sunday programme. more...
Tumeke! Calls to ban sow stalls in piggeries are mounting as animal rights campaigners including former pork industry frontman Mike King criticise the "cruel" practice. The Government vowed yesterday to investigate a farm featured in disturbing footage broadcast by TVNZ's Sunday programme. more...
Against the Current Agriculture Minister David Carter is playing political games when he says he that he wants to see if the if the intensive pig farming operation exposed by comedian Mike King is in breach of the Animal Welfare Act. more...
The Standard When Mike King, comedian, celebrity, and front-man for the pork industry's advertisements for the past few years found out the truth about the industry he was promoting, he says he was "deeply ashamed". What worse news could there be for an image-conscious industry who doesn't want their consumers and the public to know about their cruel and disgusting practices? more... Frogblog The Sunday expose on intensive pig farming has pushed the shadowy world of indoor pig farming firmly into the spotlight. TVNZ's Close-up this evening pitted Mike King (and Safe's Hans Kriek) off against Chris Trengrove, the Chair of the Pork Board, resulting in a commitment to random visits of other pig farms to see if the one exposed was really a one-off as the Industry claims, which I don't believe for a minute. more...
Peter Sankoff Good on ya, Mike King! Fantastic feature last night on Sunday report. If you haven't seen this expose, which looks at the factory farming of pigs in New Zealand - you really should. It's grim watching, to be sure, but the more we see of factory farming in order to understand what's really happening to animals in this country, the better. more...
Ali's blog Mike King on Sunday tonight with an expose on the reality of intensive pig farming in NZ. More info and how to help on this website. Sunday did their best to provide a balanced view, but our new Minister of Agriculture is an idiot and the pig industry wouldn't talk. I wonder why. If they have nothing to be ashamed of, why don't they let people into pig farms to check the conditions out? No doubt they will be all over the media trying to get their point across tomorrow more...
whoar For those of you have seen the (unmissable) sunday programme on the vile/cruel conditions farmed-pigs live under... (the one where former pork-pimp mike king realises just what he was selling/promoting.. after/during a visit to a pig farm/concentration camp..) ..would have heard that those abominable conditions were legalised/recommended by nawac..the national animal welfare advisory committee....(perhaps the most oxymoronic organisation name i have seen for quite some time..that one..) ..this organisation purports to oversee/supervise animal welfare in farming. more... |
